INSPECTION OF SANTA CRUZ DAM OUTLET PIPE, CHIMAYO, NM - 2016

On November 20, 2016, Engineers from the office of William J. Miller Engineers, Inc. inspected the outlet pipe at the Santa Cruz Dam. The Santa Cruz dam is owned by the Santa Cruz Irrigation District and provides an irrigation water supply for lands along the Santa Cruz River between Chimayo and Espanola, NM. Santa Cruz Dam is a 117 ft. tall concrete and roller-compacted concrete arch dam with an active storage capacity of about 3,200 acre-feet. The Santa Cruz Dam outlet pipe is a 42-inch diameter stainless steel pipe (304L) with ¼” wall thickness and is located downstream of a 36” jet-flow gate valve. The downstream housing of the jet-flow gate valve is carbon steel and is connected to the outlet pipe at a flanged joint. The length of the pipe downstream of the joint is 36.2 feet. The outlet pipe and valve were installed in 1989 during the modification of Santa Cruz Dam. Access to the pipe was gained by climbing a ladder placed in a boat floating in the spillway stilling basin. The boat was anchored to the spillway wall and to the downstream face of the spillway.
